Context

The Paris Agreement (2015) recognizes green hydrogen as a key driver of the energy transition and the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals. As a signatory of this agreement, Tunisia has committed to an ambitious energy transition, with the publication of a national strategy, followed recently by the announcement of a roadmap dedicated to green hydrogen. This roadmap aims to develop local production to meet national needs and also for export, particularly to Europe, in the form of green hydrogen and its derivatives.
The significant integration of renewable energies and the introduction of green hydrogen require:

  • Innovative governance supported by advanced scientific tools.
  • Technological mastery of renewable energy conversion processes and hydrogen derivatives.
  • A collaborative environment mobilizing complementary expertise.
In this context, a consortium of five Tunisian laboratories was established: the Research Consortium on Green Hydrogen Technology and Economics for Tunisia’s Energy and Ecological Transition ( CDR2024ES03). Its mission is to lay the scientific and technological foundations of the green hydrogen sector in Tunisia. Through research-based training and scientific valorisation, the consortium aims to build a critical mass of researchers capable of addressing the industrial, economic, and academic challenges related to green hydrogen. Furthermore, the Friedrich Naumann Foundation (FFN, Tunis office) has initiated, since 2024, a collaboration with the Tunisian green hydrogen network, supporting researchers in their activities related to climate change and decarbonization.

Main objectives of this 2nd edition:

  • Support the national strategy on green hydrogen and its derivatives.
  • Valorize research results and promote young researchers.
  • Encourage synergies between researchers, international experts, and industry.
